i posted this last night, but it didn’t post for some reason…trying again:
i am feeling sluggish. the weights seem heavier. WODs seem more ominous and daunting. is this normal? and when will it pass? i miss feeling strong.

@Kourtney P. – what’s your starch intake?
January 24th, 2012 on 10:12 am
a fist size amount of approved starch post WOD, per your instructions.

@Kourtney P. – go breakfast starch, fist size, as well.

I have not seen any drastic changes to my body but I expected this since this happened on my first attempt at Paleo. But in general, I am feeling better about the approach overall. Seeing it as a lifestyle change (not just 5 weeks of agony) is shedding new light on all of the great things (recipes, better tummy feelings, effect of food on mood, etc) and it feels great. Good luck to everyone…one day away from the halfway point!

Interview says a beer once in a while is ok?
Really enjoyed Taubes speech and looked up more stuff. He is pretty courageous stepping up to the nutritional community with science.

Today was the first day I felt a little sluggish. I’ve been strict-strict, getting good sleep, but just felt like I didn’t have the gas at the end to push hard to the finish line.
Overall time was faster, am I expecting too much, or should I up the carbs a bit, I’m eating 40-60g a day.

@Simon – can you share what you’ve found on Taubes. Definitely interested in learning more.
I had some carbs, sugar, dairy last night in traditional chinese dishes in celebration of Chinese New year (family dinner). and surprise! I feel like SH*T today. face feels swollen, general discomfort, not happy. So @Brian . . . “you were right.” and I’m sold. Even not going completely strict paleo, it’s clear this has made an impact. As a first paleo challenge, I’ve learned a ton and am drinking the kool-aid. Let the challenge continue!

I’m trying this one more time!
(sorry if the comment comes up 3 times)
I’m a bit discouraged because I’m not seeing the dramatic body changes as I did when doing this back in 2010…..however life feels pretty normal right now to me, so I’m more confident that I’ll keep this going for the long haul….(of course adding scaled drinking back in so that I can remember how to socialize)!

I’m feeling good and pretty strong in the past few weeks. I haven’t gotten as much sleep as recommended, but my body is forcing me into at least 7 hours a night. I have ahem…sufficient stores of body fat…so I havent felt any energy bonks during the WODs. I’ll see what tonight’s WOD brings. I definitely am not shrinking the way I did the first time, but I dont have nearly as much weight to lose. The only thing I miss is beer.

So to Brian and others who have done this before: what will happen if I introduce some fruit and nuts? I know you aren’t supposed to during the challenge, but if I cracked like a loser, how would that likely affect me in terms of performance, weight loss etc inside of the five weeks? Those things are ultimately paleo-ok, so… ?

@Mayra – can you list what you eat in a typical day? I suspect you are under eating.
@Vinner – lets wait to see if this is a pattern or just a one time thing before changing course.
@Kristin L./Karen B. – this is typical of Paleo intervention a second time after a long non-Paleo spell. You just have to stay strict longer.
@J.P. – As far as how it will effect your performance, we’ll see in 2.5 weeks. The issue with fruit and nuts is:
1) Both have a relatively high sugar content.
2) Fructose is problematic for many people both in terms of inflammation and insulin reactivity.
3) Nuts have some degree of anti-nutrients to avoid predation.
Bottomline: If you eat fruit and nuts there is an extremely high likelihood of weight gain and some chance of auto-immune reaction.
