Another weekend down, and hopefully another Paleo success.

Are you finding it easier to manage your weekends on the Paleo Diet?

I’ve found keeping supplies for a failsafe meal has made a huge difference. For the nights I get home from work late or am too exhausted to prepare a meal I’ve been keeping some prepared chicken and salad materials in the refrigerator so that I can always cobble together a salad with chicken rather than eat something less optimal.

It also just dawned on me this weekend that Super Bowl weekend is inside the challenge. That’ll be interesting. Just point me towards the guac!

+1 on @Nate O. Planning ahead makes all the difference, and knowing I have emergency protein and veggies already cooked in the fridge is huge. Plus, I feel a lot more comfortable being the demanding diner while I’m out, so overall it’s definitely easier.

are the weekends harder? only when there are epic going away parties. i caved. oh well.

in other news, an interesting article on why bacon is king! link in name.

I bought 4 packs of Trader Joes “JUST Grilled Chicken Strips” last night. Unfortunately, I didn’t read the ingredients which include sugar and modified potato starch and some other BS. You would think “Just Chicken” would only contain chicken. Damn you Joe, why do you lie to me like this.

my dad stayed with us this weekend and agreed to eat paleo with us. he ordered the Paleo Comfort Foods cookbook after we made some rockin’ fish tacos (using romaine lettuce leaves as tortilla substitute). I wouldn’t say I made a believer out of him, but at least he wasn’t lecturing about “balanced” eating.

The weekends are harder, just trying to find the time to cook paleo supplies like chicken, which by the way is getting old.

The easiest way to stay on target is to what I do; just avoid all of your friends and family.

I am finding the weekends easier. Since I wake up later, I eat breakfast/brunch later and it ends up being a humongous meal (and all Paleo) so I am not really hungry until dinner (which is also Paleo). Being busy while out and about around town is easier than when working at my desk and, as such, the craving for snacks disappears.

Amazing change in my body? Not so much. Great inspiration to keep it going? Absolutely.

just read yesterday’s comment that tequilla IS NOT considered paleo and felt compelled to respond…

    BAH.

Any one getting heartburn? I used to get it once in a while, but I get it at least once a day since starting Paleo. I’m not eating spicy items.

Still sore from Murph (even though I only did a mini-Murph).

I think the underlying assertion was that no alcohol is paleo, to which I must contest. It is human nature to seek ways to get fucked up. I’m sure even cavemen figured out how to make moonshine during the summer months when fruit was plentiful. I have no evidence of this other than my overwhelming desire to justify consuming alcohol.

I am not in the challenge because I will be out of town for the grand finale, but I started a strict-ish paleo diet on 1/12/12, and have been following along with you guys and reading all the comments, etc. I have a random question: I love guac and made a bunch yesterday. But then I realized I’ve never had guac with anything but tortilla chips and I had no idea what to dip into it. Celery and cucumber were okay. Any suggestioned paleo vehicles for guac consumption?

Follow up: I am pretty sure the answer is no, or else I would have heard about it by now, but are there any sweet potato chips out there that are paleo? Besides some almonds, I’m not sure I’ve eaten anything with the crunchy/crispy texture since starting this diet and I very much miss it.

  13. Chris M

I’ve been fairly strict except for alcohol. Even though I haven’t completely given it up, I’ve stayed away from beer and just drinking vodka sodas. Unfortunately, I did have a carbomb at my bday party this past Saturday. Sometimes, you gotta live a little!

I must say I do feel a lot better and I continue to slim down. I definitely excited to see how my hard work fares against everyone else. Regardless if I win or not, it’s been a great experience!

while not “paleo challenge friendly” I’d recommend giving plantain chips a try with the guac. once the challenge is over this is going to be my substitute for tortilla/corn chips. careful to not buy any that cook them in vegetable oil though.

    @Mickey
I know it is always to go to, but dipping bacon in quac is a winner. I also like a bacon and avocado lettuce wrap – you could easily sub guac if you wanted to. Don’t know of a particular brand of sweet potato chips, but is fairly easy to make baked ones at home. It’s more difficult to make homemade plantain chips, but that would be a great option too if you can find them in the store. I think I saw some at TJ’s, but don’t know if they are strictly paleo.

@Brian – By sleep schdule is much better (as in I feel better during day and can actually fall asleep when I want to)Thank you! But…the past couple nights I have woken up b/c of cramping in my calf. I remember a while ago mentioned a drink that could help. Could you please remind me?

For guacamole – instead of looking for paleo chips (there aren’t any) try shrimp or small bites of pork or chicken. Cutting up pork or chicken in bite sized pieces and dip them with toothpicks gives it more a appetizer feel. Seasoned with taco seasoning would be good too:

    INGREDIENTS:
    1 tablespoon chili powder
    1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/4 teaspoon onion powder
    1/4 teaspoon crushed red
    pepper flakes
    1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
    1/2 teaspoon paprika
    1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
    1 teaspoon sea salt
    1 teaspoon black pepper
    DIRECTIONS:
    1. In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder,
onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin,
    salt and pepper.

BC, Michelle Z. and Kari – thank you for the great tips on the most efficient ways to crush guacamole while not being too non Paleo!

  18. Niki

Nice to see some liveliness on the board on a Monday.

@BC-Try Kale Chips if you want something crunchy.

Daydreaming of my first non-challenge meal…….on Feb. 11.

Better this weekend for sure. We are getting into a long overdue routine of grocery shopping and making a couple of meals together on Sunday. Huge that I am not making two or three meals for different family members, just adding carbs for the kiddos. Oh, and made egg cupcakes for the first time – and big hit, wicked easy – food processor rocks.

  20. Mayra A

@Mickey: Red bell pepper is good with guac. Just make sure it’s not overly ripe so you get the crunch!

  21. Hassan

This weekend was difficult. I ate nuts and seeds twice on Saturday while traveling. There was a little bit of sugar but I don’t think it affected me too much as my activity level increased significantly throughout the weekend.

Haven’t had any alcohol since New Year’s. I did have a small orange and banana last night because they were the only two things available and I was hungry. Even though they were ripe and seemed fine the fruit tasted bland, boring, and not as sweet as I remember. Which is really weird because I used to be able to go through 6 bananas in a day and a half. True story.

  22. I hate you F-ing Scale

@Brian without alcohol and sugar how do I self-medicate my problems away?

  23. Catelyn

I usually eat guac with turkey or chicken burgers – and kale chips are great if you’re looking for something crunchy!

  24. Louis

@Catelyn which brand of Kale Chips do you prefer, or have found are clean?

  25. Niki

@Louis…you can make your own kale chips:

Kale (try Trader Joe’s pre-package, most of the stems are removed)
Olive Oil (try herbed infused oil-like at Williams-Sonoma)
    Sea Salt

Place kale on a cookie sheet, drizzle oil and sprinkle sea salt. Bake at 350 for 20 (watch them, they burn easy)

    Enjoy!

All the ones I’ve seen in stores have no-no ingredients. Plus, I tried some before the challenge and they tasted awful….like licking the floor of Potomac after Murph.

  26. Canadian Chad

@Brian – I am sure you have a ton of time to answer these posts with combining the gyms, finding a new gym, and spray painting the hell out of everything, but I figured I would give it a shot.

    1. Can you give a prize breakdown for the Paleo Challenge? Good motiviation for the last 11 days

    2. Do you think you’ll announce the winners at the last challenge or will it most likely be later on. Just curious. Figured it would be hard to tally everything that day.

  27. Why am I bigger?

Ok, now not only am I not losing weight, I’m gaining weight (on scale, in looks, and in clothes fit). I’ve been very very strict. WTF? This isn’t helping my motivation. I didn’t have much to lose in the first place, but going up wasn’t exactly the idea.

  28. Catelyn

@Louis – Niki is right on… I just make my own! I only cook them for about 8-10 minutes at 350, but my oven is intense.

  29. Mike Fitz

Things are going great and I am noticing some big differences in both my body and my performance! Looking forward to seeing my final results and improvements in the final WODs in a couple of weeks! Who has some good food suggestions for the super bowl?

  30. Chris M.

@ Mickey – I have to second the bacon in guac. I cook my bacon in the oven on a sheet pan, so it stays very straight. When it comes out and is still hot, I cut it into chip size pieces. Then, once it cools and is crispy, it is the perfect substitute for chips in the guac. Also, as Brian has told us, it adds meat/protein to this snack. I did not think it sounded tasty at first, but after trying, it became my favorite Paleo snack.
